if someone is giving you the two engines,i would go with the c.i.d..you can make compression with the 305 depending what head you put on it.if your having to buy one of these motors, then i would get a little more money together and buy a 350.i got a set of 305 heads that i pulled off a motor and they will make compression,i look them up and i cant remember the # but they have 60cc compression chambers, there out there you just have to find them.the 305 heads are good for building compression, they dont flow that good.

They both made about the same power if you equate them with the same rating the high performance 265 might have made a little more. We ran one in the 70s with two 4bbls it had a bit of work done to it it was built to run in the k stock class. I would have to agree though the 350 would be a better option.

I cant find out where to look....I am lookin an the block itslef buti cant even see the vin on it...(Note: it is covered in greese) I haven't took the time to clean it becauseI planned on picking one, cleaning it and droppin it in...I'll clean it up and find out....by the way, what kind of difference should the year make on it....?

Bowtieguy: I have a 305 4bolt main in the car right now...its the 2nd one I've went through.... I have been trying to find a 350 around whereI love thatI can hear run beforeI buy it... the first 305 IhadI made the mistake of not hearing it before hand and it smoked badly....

There should be a casting number by the bell housing on the block. Certion 265s had some weird stuff no filter no side mounts I dont think they had accessory brackets either if you could id it as a hi po one it might be worth something. If you have a 4 bolt 305 either its been changed from a 2 bolt or its a 350 they didnt make a 4 bolt 305.

Is there a place where I can run the Vin # and see what it originally was?

Thanks Griff

Why would any sane person want a 265 block. You do realize that it was made in 1955 and was GM's first try at a V-8 and it did not last long before it was bored out to 283.[sm=jawdrop.gif]
