Default What effects of worn engine to O2?

I'm just curious on what the the ECM does to compenstate for an aging engine. I not talking about a oil fouling mosquito killing engine that needs a quart every month but mainly on an engine that's alittle on the tired sideand smokes on the cold start-up and may need to top off the oil now and then. My car still runs quite well but I have noticed alittle drop in mpg. I've checked the O2 to see if it'sfouled but it looks fine. I'm just wondering if the ECM compensates if any and how.
Thanks.
