Default fuel pump problem

i have a 78 camaro with a 454/400 turbo.its mildly beefed up.i bought a fuel pumpfor it .the fuel pump i bought was for a 396hipo.my problem is this.when i'm running the car in the shop the level of fuel in thefuel filter is about half full.when i rev it up or take it around the block and take it back in the shop the fuel level is just barely noticeable in the bottom of the filter housing.should i buy a aftermarket fuel pump like a holly or something.

Is the pump mechanical or electric?

mechanical.the fuel filter has never been full since the day i fired this engine up,maybe 500 miles and that is in about a 18 month period.the float levels seem to be fine at idle.my fuel gage is a autozone cheapo so it sets there and bounces all over the place,it shows about 6-10 psi,avg 8..every now and then(not everytime)it pops and sputters on the top end and i'm just wondering if it is running out of fuel.if i was to get a holley pump, which one should i get.they offer different psi pumps.

Pump might not have enough volume for your engine, may want to try one with more volume at the same pressure.

they don't always fill all the way up,some air gets trapped inside,(breakan old one open some time and take a look at how they are put together)

Are you having any drivability or full throttle problems...you might consider installing a pusher pump back at the tank,

When we first put the 454 in the c-10, we used only the mech pump. it seemed like it ran fine, I decided to install an elecetirc pump as well, I was suprised at the difference it made..

on my c-10, we run a big mechanical with a holly 110 fuel pump back by the tank. we have the 3/8 inline filter right at the carb that uses the 1/4 return line. we runthe return line back to the tank. we also removed the fuel sock in the tank and run a big filter between the tank and the electric pump...

on my camaro, I run a larger electic fuel pump with a big spin on filter before the pump, ( no tank sock) I use 1/2 inch steel line to the front. I run 2inline 3/8 filters in parrallel both with return lines, to the tank.
