Fuel pump is not working now.

Fuel pump is not working now.
My son and I bought an 88 Camaro as a prodject car. We mainly were looking for a car with no cancer. The engine needed some work. We pulled the engine rebuilt it and proceeded to drop it back in. We finally got everthing hooked up, but it will not start. We have spark, but I noticed that I could not hear the fuel pump pressure-up when the ignition is turned to the on position, (not the start pos.). I am lost in the woods on this one. Can anyone help?

Has the car been sitting for a while? If so the pump has probably gone bad. While being a fairly inexpensive one, it's still in the gas tank. So kinda pain to put in. Before replacing that, make sure the fuel pump relay is working. you should be able to feel it thump when the ingition is turned on.

You should also check the fuse. If you want to check the voltage at the pump, make sure you attatch the positive at the tank and then as far away as the voltometer will reach hit a ground so IF it does spark, you won't be fried.

So far I have not felt the relay activate. There is current at the fuse. but will check voltage at the relay circuit. I have a diagnostic procedure for the TPI fuel pump circuit , which I could follow ,but am not sure if it would be the same for the TBI application.

If You Want To Check The Circuit Pretty Close To The Pump Without Going Underneath, The Wires Go Through The Passenger Compartment Just Above The Drivetrain Hump Underneath The Carpet In The Rear. Sick

RE: Fuel pump is not working now.
Power to the fuel pump is provided via two paths. They start at the F/P fuse which is always hot. Form there one path goes to the fuel pump relay (used to prime the pump during cranking), and the other path goes through a set of contacts in the oil pressure sensor (contacts close through after the oil press reaches 5 PSI and is used to power the pump once the egine is running).
In your case, you should be interested in the path through the pump relay, which includes the F/P fuse, the F/P relay, the F/P, and connecting wires. When the key is turned on, the computer powers the relay coil, the relay contacts close and power is provided to the pump. If the engine does not start in a certain amount of time, this connection will be automatically dropped to prevent flooding.

Fuel Pump is now working. I wasn't getting current to the fuel pump relay, because the computer was getting power. We finally found a wire that was overlooked and hooked it up. Thanks for everyone input.
