1996 stereo question
I might be buying a 1996 Camaro today or Saturday... but all it has is a tape player... and I don't even own any tapes. So what kind of stereo can I put in it? Is there anything else I can do besides put in a basic head unit with the black plastic around it? If you dont know what I'm trying to say I'll put up a pic. And also, since I'm just going to be listening to my iPod, so should I even install a new stereo or just something like a Harmon/Kardon Drive+play?

Camaros and Trans Ams are notorious for there acoustics! This is the perfect car for a kicking sound system. Throw in a 200 - 300 kenwood, or pioneer, and toss in a mmats amp and speakers, or a treo setup, and your car will roar. Either of the 300 hundred models from pioneer and kenwood will mesh with your ipod, both have usb ports, and most ipods you can get a tuner attach for. The cheapest way to go would be to just get the tuner attach for your ipod, and leave the factory setup alone,

Alright thats good.
Oh and I have one of the FM tuner things for my iPod, but they suck, so thats why I wanted something that wires directly to the ipod.
Do those stereos look okay in the dash?
I hate when it looks like the stereo is just stuck there and doesnt look like it belongs.

RE: 1996 stereo question
The look willbe determined by your taste. If you pick a gawdy one, it will look like crap. Most installs only take about 20 to 30 min. It is really easy! and if you get the installation kit from your retailer, it will be even easier. Best Buy, Circuit City both good choices. We have a lot of specialty shops here in Omaha, and I prefer to use them, but it is up to you. I agree those tuners can be crap, but if you have a good one, it is just like listening to the radio.

RE: 1996 stereo question
Well I just realized... its a Bose system... and sounds alright except for the left front speaker seems to have a loose wire (it cuts on and off, I guess I can just check the connections, maybe solder it back up), so can I just get a stock CD player that will replace the cassette one thats in it?

RE: 1996 stereo question
Yeah, you can usually get a deal on installation if you want to. If you spend 200 to 300+ they will usually throw in installation. That is the way to go. If you get one with mp3 capabilities, you can burn the same file that you put on your mp3 player to a cd and it can hold upto like 180 songs depending on the disc you use.. That is a lot of music! As for the speaker, make sure you test your work after you attempt to repair it ( before you put it back togetheer) It could be blow, that will give you scratchy annoying sounds. cheap replacements at walmart! Pioneer, or Sony. don't spend less than 75 bucks for a pair. You will be dissapointed.

RE: 1996 stereo question
you shouldnt have to replace the wire. only speakers and Head unit. mine had bose in it, and i never had to do wires, just my stock rear steakers were 8ohms, and fronts were 4ohms. jus meant rear speakers got less watts.
