could be brake pad dust, what color are your brake pads.

were the rotors changed when brake job was done? also after driving the car for a fair length trip check the rotors for heat, excess heat will cause rust to form fast or can cause a color change in the steel.

Brake rotors are bare metal, they do rust unless you paint the non-pad surface.
Even the pad surface of the rotor will rust if the car sits long enough, but the brake pads will clean them back off.
What you have there is normal.

Yes the rotors were replaced as well as pads. They were replaced two months and suddenly look like something out of a junk yard.
I am puzzled though why this is the first time I have ever noticed any sign of rust let alone the huge amount that has accumulated in two months time.I n the twelve years I have had the car I have never come across this.Although I am relieved to hear it is normal but am left wondering why now suddenly could it be poor quality or maybe replaced with a something different ?I appreciate all the replies and help from everyone i love learning about my car

Don't know whether your old rotors had a rust preventive coating on them or not, but there's nothing on bare untreated metal (or cast iron) to prevent rust.
With wheels that show the rotors, I always give the hat of the rotor a shot of Rustoleum paint.

metal based pads can cause a rust looking dust to cover rotor and wheel as well. thats such an odd color that the first thing i thought of was pad dust.
