The timing is controlled by the computer in response to the knock sensor signal, and is not adjustable. The idle is also computer controlled and is not adjustable. If the car is running poorly, look for trouble codes, and change plugs & plug wires if needed.
Idle speed varies with Engine Coolant Temperature. You have to have a special program to adjust timing. You are just hiding the problem, and maybe making it worse, if you think adjusting that stuff will help. As Pete said, check for causes to the poor running.
Well iam not trying to hide anything or adjust anything at all... iam trying to figure out if my car is just a royal piece of f**CK*N **** or what.. i shouldnt be paying out the *** getting 18 in town and 20 on the highway ... so iam looking for anythign that would alter my mileage and some of the suggested things for older cars are check timing tranny modules o2 sensors if they have etc. just trying to figure out why it sits at 1000 RPM no matter what thats its idle and that seems high... going from a 97 cavalier sitting at 500 rpm when idling to this its double and iam only adding 2 cylinders so explain why it has to be so high.......................???????????? iam really pissed off right now too because i just snapped an o2 sensor in bank 1 because its so hardened into the block it will not move with my entire body and a crow bar pulling on a ratchet hooked to it........To make things even worse i dont even have 60 freakin dollars to replace it now iam screwedf
Dude, do yourself a big favor. When it gets that frustrating and you cant figure out what to do next. Just put the tools down and walk away. The next day it will be much eaiser with a clear head.
Yeah, take a break an have a couple of beers. LOL. Seriously, the timing and fuel mixture are already optimized. Scan the computer for trouble codes, and take care of those problems first, then put in cleanair and fuel filters, plugs, and if needed new plug wires. The car should not be idling at 2000 RPM, so start looking for vacuum leaks after the throttle valve.
Haha i had a "few beeers" and yah its alot easier comin at it the second day, i got out the torch ill just have to heat it up and take it out but man that car is really startin to drive me nuts, its gotta be a vaccum leak somewhere or something thats killin that mileage or maybe it is just that 1 o2 sensor i had the car checked out a while back and they said its getting lazy and offsetting the other 3 so hopefully things go alot smoother today ! sorry for freakin out towards you guys youve all been pretty helpful!!
