what the...
ok so i start my car....starts, then dies, try again. starts, then dies, try again, starts, lopes at 250 rpm and tries to get to idle speed and dies. WTF!? i dont hear the whistle sound that i usually comes in a 3800. im guessing IAC?

Can you scan it for codes? Did this start to happen all at once or did it gradually get this bad? Thst whistle sound, are you referring to the fuel pump noise when you turn the key to the on position?

I've always considered fuel pump noise to be a humm not a whistle. The IAC is a good place to start checking. If you can hear air flowing through the valve(whistle) and now you don't...it's possibly failing to allow air through it to idle. Does the car stay running if you start it and hold the throttle open a little?

Sounds like the fuel pump may have croaked. How many miles on the car?
When you gas up do you fill the tank? Or do you put in $5 or $10, go a few days, then put in another $5 or $10? Doing that will shorten fuel pump life since the brushes inside the pump are lubricated by gas. If the pump is sucking air a lot the brushes wear faster.

I'm not sure, does the 98 have a MAF sensor? If so, sounds like that.
To rule out the IAC, start the car and have a friend give it a knock with a wrench or comething. If there's a difference and the RPM's jump it's the IAC.
For fuel pump, put the key to the on position. You should hear the fuel pump turn on. Put the pedal to the floor twice before starting the car. Start the car and pump the gas pedal while starting the car and after it's started. You should smell gas when you start it up because the cylinders are full of gas.

fuel pump is good, just put in a racetronix unit. had some punk sugar the tank, didnt get any in though...retard. didnt like my locking gas cap. but the whistling sound im referring to is when the IAC is open. mines not whistling. but the instant my foot hits the gas it stays running fine.

check fuel pressure. check the fuel filter. take it off and drain into a clear container from the tank side so you can see whats in there. logically if your not getting fuel the computer will try to rich it out more and close the iac.

Take the IAC motor out and use throttle body cleaner on it. Plug it in and put your key to the On position and the cylinder will move out. Spray that really good with throttle body cleaner. Let it dry and then put it back in. Spray some TB cleaner in the intake while you're at it. That should help the iac.
