Someone is pulling your chain or you are hoping for a 5 speed automatic. If you have a manual transmission (5 speed), you don't have a torque converter. If you have an automatic, it only has 4 speeds. The torque converter has a torque converter clutch that keeps it from slipping. The torque converter and the TCC are one assembly, and you have to remove the transmission to change it. The priceseems on the high side. Alldata calls for 4.7 hours labor plus parts. IMO about $800 would be more like it

its an auto. by 5th gear i m refering to OD. i know that it is a long process to change it and i dont have the equipment to pull a trany out. i didnt think i would be that much to fix, the guy didnt even offer suggestions. just immediately threw out the $1350. im going to go elsewhere. the mechanic that checked it out and told me what the problem is is a long time family friend that i can actually trust. but he doesnt do trany work so he referred me. anyway, how much can i expect for the part? where would be a good place to order one?

The auto transmission in these cars has only 4 speeds: D=3rd=direct=drive; OD=4th=overdrive. What feels like a 5th gear is the torque converter locking up. A stock reman converter should cost around $150 for parts.

ok, so how do i know which one to buy? the only difference i can see is the stall. one is at 2000 and the other is at 2025. i have no idea that that means. what is the name/model of the auto transmission in these cars? i would like to be able to fix this for a little $ as possible since i am still in college and have very little cash

The differnce in stall speed is to small to make a difference, just make sure you get one that fits.
