Default time for a tune up?

i was driving down the road the other day and the car just completely died on me while slowing down to make a left at an intersection, i held the clutch and let it coast onto the side of the road and tried to start it. it tried forever and started to get flooded. so i sat there for five or so minutes and kept turning the ignition key on and off, letting the fuel pump kick on and off. it eventually started and it sputtered for a second, and now it's driving like it always did. could it just need a coil pack or spark plugs? also, the car was on dead empty earlier that day, maybe it picked up a drug in the gas. i know it's bad to let them get really low on gas, but i had no choice this time.

Maybe it was an EMP (unlikely) -- that can knock out your car, and the gov't is testing such things...
See:

Or your fuel pump could be dying if you ran it empty...

yup, the fuel pump uses the fuel to cool the pump motor, not enough fuel= no cooling for the fuel pump.
