So since one of my best friend works at Jiffy Lube here, He gets discounts/free oil, I've heard some say that it depends on how much milage is on the car to say if it's worth using synthetic. My car has around 74K and is a 95 3.4 so my question is should i use synthetic or stick to conventional?

 

I just changed to synthetic on all my vehicles and only one of them has 0 miles on the engine. The suburban has 99K and the explorer 113K. Not sure of the actual mileage on the engine in the camaro with the donor engine but I'm guessing it has well over a 100K on it. I used Penzoil in the Suburban but everything else has Moblie One

 

When is it not worth using a better oil like synthetic? It's a superior oil compared to dino oil, so the choice is simple. Everyone has their favorite brand, and I like Mobil 1. I use it in all our cars, and have switched over engines that had anywhere from 20k miles up to 120k miles, with never an issue. Plus, a 5 quart jug is only $21 at Waldomart.

 

the only time conventional/dino oil is not a good idea to use is when breaking in a rebuit motor. not sure what they do at the factory before putting synthetic in, if anything. lol never owned a new car.

Go for Mobil One, it's worth it.

 

In school most teachers will tell you as long as you use a name brand API correct oil and change it as directed synthetic are over kill.

In 1989 I was working a fleet van that had blown a head gasket due to a thermostat failure. It was 5 years old and had 130K on it. First thing I noticed when I open the hood was a large sticker that said "Use only Mobil 1" and it listed the oil change history. They changed the oil every 4-5K. Internaly it was one of the cleanest engines I ever worked on. A wipe of a rag and you where looking at the casting. The motor was cleaner then some of the 1 year old motors I worked on with 12K on the clock.

I have used mobil 1 ever since. If I am switching a car over to mobil 1 I normally do a second oil change in a 1000 miles or so just to get all the old stuff out.

 

I remember when Mobil 1 motor oil first came out in the 70's. I also remember that it was almost black in color coming out of the bottle, and I thought eeeew why would I want to use that stuff, plus how do you tell when it's "old"? Word started going around that you shouldn't put it in an engine that has high mileage because it will shrink your seals, or find an existing small leak and make it worse. There was a little bit of truth to that, but the first synthetic oil was a totally different formulation from how it is now, and that problem was solved. Unfortunately though, that urban legend that synthetic oil WILL cause a leak is still going around today. It could happen (as anything can I spose), if you have a leak that's all sludged up and dripping slowly, then the better oil eventually can clean things away. If you get a leak later, it's not that synthetic caused it, it's because the leak was already there but the engine was all gunked up inside. To me, the good outweighs the bad (maybe developing a leak), since the superior lubricating properties of synthetic is a given.
