Default starting in cold winter

Hey guys
i drive a V6,3.4L camaro,i have seen a lot of guys leavin the car engine on the first time they start in cold winter mornin and then they start drivin.i know it might sound silly but why exactly is that done and for how long it shud be done and in case i forgot to do it how will that affect the performance of my car?

i would let it warm up for at least a minute. that allows it to cycle oil through the motor.

You can let it idle for a while, or just start off driving slow for a few minutes. The idea is to get the oil circulating before putting a heavy load on the engine. It also helps to use light oil in cold weather so that the oil gets to where it has to go quicker. It is bad to race a cold engine, as some people do, to get it to warm up faster. Cold starts are the main cause of engine wear.
