Default Shift **** issue

96 V6 auto tranny, I cannot get the push button **** to push down in order to shift out of park. I lifted up the plastic console part to look at shifter but can't figure out what is catching or not releasing, any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
osduck5

Did you try stepping on the brake pedal to release the shifter interlock? If you did, and it didn't, then it probably isn't.

Yes. I was even looking around the shift mechanism to see if anything was moving in there while stepping on the brake pedal. I'm about to hook the tractor to it and drag it out of my way! LOL.

Finally!!! After 2 days of jacking around with this thing, I was able to get it to go in reverse and move it. Still don't know what was keeping it from shifting but by pressing and wiggling the shifter back and forth, I was able to work it into reverse. If this car had a name, it would be "Christine"! LOL Any of you remember that movie?
