When i have my 98 V6 idling for a couple of minutes the temp seems to rise pretty fast. Driving it for any amount of time and it will be at 170 or so. but at idle it will rise to 210 and maybe higher. Should i worry about this? could I get a manual fan switch for idling? I know the fans kick on at 215 but that seems to high for me.

Check and flush your coolant -- install a flush kit, check and replace your thermostat (inexpensive). Make sure your system is running optimally.
Do you know the stock fan temps? You should pickup at least a basic manual for your car -- Chiltons or Haynes...

The engine is designed to run hot. As long as the temp gauge stays out of the red zone it is OK. The factory stat is set to start opening at 185-190, so the engine will normally run another 10 degree hotter. The factory set the fans to come on at 220, so everything is fine.

Did you know that a car running at its optimum operating temperature gets up to 50% better mileage than one that’s cold? Also, ignoring an SES can increase fuel consumption, by up to 40%...
