Default Rack & Pinion

I think I am getting my threads mixed up. Hope not.

2002 Camaro. V6. 200,000+ miles.

I have an oil leak at the dust cover on my rack and pinion steering. I also have oil in both boots.

Other than the oil leaks, the steering is near perfect. I am thinking that if all that is bad are seals, why not rebuild this R&P??

I have two other vehicles to drive, so, taking this rack off and rebuilding it is a nice option to have.

Are there any precedure for rebuilding a rack & pionion as far as seals and dust covers?? Are these parts available??

thanks
John

There is a precedure for rebuilding the the pinion seal but you going to need replace all the valve seals and you need the special tools used to protect the seals at they are installed. To the best of my knowledge there is no process or parts available for fixing the ends once they leak. Even at the dealer under warranty that is a non-servicable failure that requires the rack to be replaced. I have rebuilt a lot of racks and I would be willing to bet that at 200K the sealing surface are no longer in spec. Any reman is going to require some machine work if not a sleave.

For what you can get a rebuilt unit for, it ain't worth messing with trying to fix the old one. Since the seals are leaking, odds are good there's slop in the gears too.
