Default overheating, boiling in water pump?

i have a 97 v6 camaro that is having some overheating issues. driving on the highway i never had any trouble, but in the city i get really bad overheating. i just replaced the waterpump a few weeks ago and today i heard a boiling noise coming from it. (i was running it with water)

I also was previously running it with non dex-cool coolant if that means anything.

Any ideas that can help me?

Is your radiator clogged up? I had a jeep that was boiling the coolant. I changed the water pump and it still did the same thing. Turned out to be the radiator clogged up. Once I replaced that, it never did it again.

Are your fans running? Is you Rad cap any good? If the system will not hold pressure it will boil at 212 degs. Under 16 lbs of pressure the boiling point rises to like 260 degs. So if you heard boiling with a pressurized system you got problems.

I forgot to mention that I changed the radiator cap. Before I changed it steam was shooting out from around it, so it didn't look like it was holding enough pressure. After I changed it is when the boiling started in the water pump.

Plain water boils at 212 degrees, easily reached by the engine. Coolant (antifreeze) raises the boiling point considerably, is a lubricant, and helps to prevent internal rust. Do not run with just water.

His system should be under pressure though, which would raise the boiling point to above the normal operating temperature. Not that running just water is a good idea, but just sayin'
