Unhappy Never ending problem!

1999 / 3800 engine / manual transmission

So for about 6 months now I’ve had this terrible engine problem. It’s an intermittent tricky S.O.B and although I’ve preformed many troubleshooting techniques in the book I still haven’t narrowed it down.

Codes thrown include: cylinder number 4 misfire detected, cylinder number 6 misfire detected, injector 2 control circuit.

Symptoms include: misfire, gas smelling smoke coming out of tailpipe, engine cut out at idle, rough idle, clunking engine noise, lack of power, bad fuel economy. Now these symptoms don’t all happen at the same time mind you. It’s off and on, this and that, and the codes are all thrown separate of each other.

Some diagnostics I've done so far are to check the primary and secondary coil pack resistance, use a mechanics stethoscope to listen to the injectors for the clicking sound, and check spark plugs and wires, changed the fuel filter and air filter.

has anyone had this problem before or know any other diagnostic test i can preform or what it might be?

Damn dude that sounds pretty bad. My friend's 97 Merc C280 did that and he fixed it with a spark plug change. Not very knowledgeable on this stuff, so I got no idea.

this is kinda the way mine started out...i've got a 98 v-6. i started the other thread called At Wits End. Gas smelling steam, different misfires detected when scanned, rough idle, SUCK *** fuel economy....i should stop there..

I'm in the process of getting new O2 sensors put on...actually today. That's what everyone's been saying since ive already went thru all the other stuff...if this don't work...i don't know....i'm outta guesses and MONEY!

Red face o2 sensor is my next guess too

I actually have another symptom that might just be normal i dont know. if im working under the hood with the car running if i close the hood sometimes the car dies as if its not getting enough Oxygen. this may be normal when dealing with a misfire but i dont know.
