Default help

hey there i am pretty much new to the whole car thing. ok my car seems to back fire when i floor it then it seems to sound like a machine gun and i loss power. if i let off the gas to about 25% the car acts normal. the exhaust reeks of a really strong gas odor. this summer my mechanic did some work on my car because my radiator fluid was getting into my oil. i dont really remember what he replaced. any help on figuring out what is wrong would be great

oh the car is a 95 camaro 3.4 with 115,000 on it

Catalytic converter. It's in your exhaust and helps with emissions. How long since plugs and wires have been changed?

I actually just failed emissions and he said I had way to many NOx(knocks?). He said I probably need a new converter so I went and got one and will put it on tomorrow. I don't really know when the last time I changed my spark plugs, how often should they been changed?
