I would say you possible have a throttle position sensor out, or airflow temp. sensor out -- maybe a computer problem -- if you have a check engine light get it scanned -- Autozone does it free for 1996 & newer cars...

Get it fixed, and in the meantime, switch to Dexron 6 (it is replacing 3, as GM is no longer licensing 3) for your trans, and change your trans fluid/filter...

Sounds like a major air leak. As I understand, the 3.4's have a history ofintake problems. Use a can of carb cleaner and spray all the joints on the intake and listen for a change in idle. If the idle drops when spraying one or more spots on the intake, you've found your air leak.

Another possiblity is a bad brake booster (pinch off the hose), carbon canister, gas capor EGR valve.

I'd suspect a faulty idle air control motor, faulty EGR pintle (if stuck slightly open, it could significantly raise RPMs, but if opened all the way at idle, engine would not run), or a vacuum leak. There are many vacuum operated mechanisms on the vehicle, so take some time and look at the easy to see vacuum fittings. Make sure they're snug and not cracked. If you find a suspected leak, take a bottle of starting fluid and spray over the area with the engine running. If it's the source, it should, theoretically speaking, idle even higher until it's been burned and passed through the system.

Starting fluid? 1 stray spark and you're missing your eyebrows! Or worse. I'll stick with carb cleaner. I don't even like the unlit propane torch for the same reason.

Use a guide tube. It's safer than you think. Carb cleaner is also highly flammable. And i'm simply talking about a tiny, miniscule squirt. Even that would be enough to see a difference in idle.

The wiring could be bad to the air temp sensor too -- check it for burns, etc.
