The easiest way is to just swap the whole rear with that of a Z28. The factory thinks the gears you have is the ideal ratio. It is a balance of Mileage and Preformance. Now do you want to tip the scales? What do you want out of the car?
All gears can do is move your power band. You give up something to get something. Everyone here will have different opinions on the "ideal ratio" I have a slightly different veiw of gearing then most here. I used to build dirt track cars, we swapped gears based on the weather. Gearing to low and you did not have the right torque coming out of the turn gearing to high and you ran out of RPMs before you ran out of straight away.
After all that a stock set of 3.23 or 3.42 can help a little out of the hole and not hurt to bad at the top end. Step one is what gears do you already have?
