Default Gear question...

Not sure if this is the exact spot to put this, but oh well.
I'm looking at a set of new gears for my car, either 3.73's or 4.10's
My question is, if I went to the 4.10's would I pretty much be screwed from a roll race?

In a 3.8? I wouldn't go any higher than 3.42... But that's just me...

Variables are...What speed does this "race" start?. What kind of trans do you have and what is the gearing? Do you have what I consider a "balanced" eng. Meaning was the eng built to perform well thru the entire powerband, or does it pull hard either high or low???
Hard to answer without all the facts...sorry!

Normal roll races I've done are either 30 or 50.
A4 Tranny, stock 3.02's or 3.08's I can't remember which one it is.
3800 isn't really known for any power in the top end.
I do most of my power low with a decent mid-range.

The 4.10:1 gear is a hole shot gear IMHO. With proper "meats" of course. Start the race at 30 and if your trans kickdown is right, you should have a chance...To Get A Ticket!!![sm=icon_rofl.gif]
How 'bout this???[sm=nxsmile.gif]

3.73 or 4.10 is good for getting off the line... Your top end would be completely screwed cuz you'll run outta gear before you hit the finish line lol. My 3.8 does well to make it with 3.42s lol. 3.42s have a nice punch off the line, but your top end isn't effected much. But if you want a great hole shot and can give your car that extra push it needs to wind it out... Then I say go for 3.73. But yeah it's gonna hurt you from a 30 mph or 50 mph roll either way.

Any idea on how much this will actually hurt my top speed?
I understand the concept of the gears on acceleration vs top end, but any numbers you could throw at me?
My car is limited at 118, I don't really need to be going over 100 hardly, just want to get there quick!

personally, i wouldnt go with anything bigger than a 3.42 on a v6 as well.. 4.10's on a 6 = crap gas mileage, im sure..
You could find a Y87 rear end somewhere.. just my opinion..

based upon what ive read 4:10s are going to hurt your top end some but with the limter on your camaro already well below its potential i doubt youll notice it much where you will notice that ratio is at the pump its gonna killyour milage and the 3:73s are already above 3;43s of a Z28 no need to go any bigger than that
