Default Exhaust

I'm having severe catalytic converter problems. It has been rattling since i bought it, but in the past week I've gotten a SES light and from what I've been able to find by searching it sounds like my Cat has finely started to block my exhaust flow. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get the code(s) read and will see then.

Anyways on to my question. I'm looking at MagnaFlow Direct-Fit Catalytic Converters and am wondering if they bolt right up to my manifolds (where they come down to the y pipe). Is this the Y-pipe, cat and s bend all in one? If so then i would just have to weld on my existing exhaust from the s-bend (catback) back right?

If all that is true i will be able to swap out my manifolds later on for headers and they should bolt right up? I'm hoping I'm correct on all of this, but if now please straiten me out. I'm just getting into the mechanical side of things now. Thanks a lot, Drew

I just went to Magnaflow's website, and it appears to be what you thought, only a much higher price. http://www.car-sound.com/02product/d...irectfit=23466

Before you put the order in I'd clarify what you're actually getting.

Ok thanks for clarifying that. How come it looks like the bolt-on spots look so low? Why is there so much pipe above this spot?

I was also wondering if I would notice a difference in just replacing my Cat with This one I don't think that i would since the pipe diameters between the stock piping and that kit are the same. I would have to cut the stock y-pipe when adding my headers, but that wouldn't be a problem.

So I'm thinking that I'll just buy this Cat and weld it in and get the MagnaFlow Exhaust kit next and add my headers after that. Sound reasonable? Thanks again, Drew

Those "bolt-on spots" slide to the end of the pipe where the exhaust manifold is. Free flowing exhaust is always a good idea. If you got the money, go for it. FYI, the inlet and outlet of the stock cat are 3" id. It's just that on the stock cat, they reduced it down to 2.25" id.

get a cat that is the same size as your stock exhaust, which is 2.5 i believe. you dont want the shop trying to angle weld some sheet metal or anything.

also, the basic mods thread in the stickies here in the 4th gen section outline about every option for exhaust. check that out to see what you want to do, and ask around here in the v6 section what your options are. If you want to do long tube headers at some point dont waste your money on a full midpipe right now.

I thought 02StanGT said the diameter is 3". I'll look it up. I've read the stickies, but had a few questions of my own. I don't think i'll ever do long tube headers. More than likely i'll stick with mid-length.

It's the same size going in as it is going out. Only on the outlet side, Chevy put a reducer to go down from 3" to 2.25".

if ur doing mids or shorties (which im not sure of the availability for v6 but....) u might as well get a full midpipe now and pick up a couple extra ponies. otherwise u will be wasting money buying a weld in midpipe now only to replace it down the road. just my opinion

Thanks 02StanGT

I'm thinking about getting some PaceSetter headers. Would these bolt straight up to any midpipe i put in? If this is true i might just get something like this Catco midpipe setup. Have you heard anything about the Catco midpipes? The only info i've found on Catco is their converters.
