Default Engine Cleaning?

So i need to know if anyone has any safe but effective ways to clean my 11 years worth of grease and grime off of my engine. I'm worried that i'll get water on the cpu or in the distributor. I just wanna know what products i can use and the best way to make my engine look brand new. I just am worried about getting things like the alternator wet or water in the distributor.

Some simple green, a rag and some good old elbow grease.

I warm the engine and spray it down the something like engine brite and let it sit for a few minutes then use a garden hose with spray nozzle to spray the engine off, trying to keep away from the coil paks. Depending on where your gunk is at, you might be able to clean with rags. Just don't use high pressure to clean it.

Also, depending on if the bottom of engine is dirty, a cheap can of oven cleaner sprayed on old grease and oil will cut the stuff loose but it will also take paint and eat away at any wiring it gets on, seals and gaskets. Thats what we use to clean old tractors off with before we paint them. Might not be good to use unless you are sure you can keep it off all the important stuff.

I had great luck with purple power's citrus degreaser (orange and blue bottle) and rags. Spray, wipe off, spray again, wipe another layer off, ect
