i ve been havin some problems with my gas 3.4 engine ive changed alot of stuff new 02 sensers ,headers, exhaust, air kit,TPS park plugs and wires all of its performance parts and im still gettin bad gas milage so i consider its the egr valve and i did put 5w 30 oil into the engine with 135000 milesi probably should not have done that the lifters do make a sound when i start to accelerate. its still runnin goodno power loss jus when i start thecar i hear a noise from the egr valve and smell gas.when i turn the car off i hear the egr valve makin a noise

I'm struggling with my EGR valve as well, same engine, almost identical miles. Two quick questions...what are your mileage figures now and are you getting a "service engine soon" light coming on? With mine, it seems to run fine but the light comes on periodically and then goes out. I did try taking it off and cleaning it, but I'm not sure how good of a job I did in retrospect. If you do buy a new one, be careful that you get the right one. I've noticed that online parts stores often show a non digital valve in their picture, even though it's listed as the correct one for our engine.

you said you were getting bad milage and I was curious what you consider bad. I get 28-29 mpg highway with mine and hope to make a few mods to do a little better. If your "SES" light isn't coming on, I would suspect that your EGR valve isn't the problem. Are you sure it's making a noise?

Where is your EGR valve located on your engine? Does this diagram show what you're referring too?

That's a head scratcher for sure. You might take it a trusted mechanic and see what they say.

Bruce, I'm having pretty much identical symptoms to you. My 94 3.4L has 160k miles, but I've been ignoring the SES light for several years now- would have started around 125/130k or so. I've had no noticible difference in power or mileage, though it did start this high pitched squeal about 6 months ago coming, seemingly, from behind the EGR, that sounds pressure related (increases in pitch with rpm but lags when rpm reduces quickly) and correlates with what I'd expect from pressure/actuation in the EGR valve. I haven't been able to pinpoint the cause- may be a reflection of the sound, or something completely unrelated. I replaced the O2 sensors, which worked for about 2 days, then the SES light started coming back on.

I'd intended to break off my EGR and clean it out, but the bolts are rusted on there pretty damned good. If you fix your problem, please post back!
