I've had my 95 3.4 since last summer, having found it on Ebay. Periodically but not very often, when driving, the check engine light comes on, but will go off even while driving. It always comes on the moment I engage the cruise. My old code reader wouldn't do OBD I, so I just got an Autoxray 5000, (thanks libertyforall!) and found that the code was "77 EGR number 3 solenoid failure". I've done some research on the EGR system and really didn't come across any links to the cruise control system from the EGR system. Anyone ever heard of this? Also, would one reasonably expect that this indicate a bad EGR valve itself, or should I look for something else, like cleaning, new gasket or something like that. I hate to just hang a new $200 part and find its something else. Thanks!

 

Generally you can clean them and you've got a 10% chance it will fix the situation, or sometimes jsut delay it. the EGR performs differently under different driving conditions, when you tell your computer to go cruise it may jsut react in a way that helps your computer notice teh failure. Does it ONLY come on when you enguage cruise or does it other times as well.

 

Without the cruise engaged,the check enginecomes on very seldom. On long trips it will actually shut itself off after a time, and very seldom will it be on after a shutdown and restart. I'm hoping just a simple cleanup and gasket replace will do the trick, but the cruise situation had me confused. Because of a third brake light ground problem, the cruise didn't work very often, but that's solved now and I'm taking a road trip this weekend to check the whole situation more carefully. Thanks!
