Default Does anyone have a 98-02 v6 5m with aftermarket rear gears

I have an 01 and i got it like three months ago and going interstate speeds my speedo reads like 100 and about 3 rpms. I think the rear gears have been swapped. its quick on start up but i dont care about that i want the factory gears plus when i get to going about 90 actual speed the dang thing hits the governer. That really sucks! Im not positive that this is the prob. but im pretty sure cause it has factory wheel size and tire. also the VSS code is ok and i got new guages. So this is the last thing i can think of. If anyone has modded their gears please let me know if your cars doing the same thing mine is! If this is the prob. then i am going to replace the gear with factory. Any input will be helpful!

In what gear do you get 3000 rpms? This would help us in solving your problem and getting you an answer back.

The car is in 5th gear turning about 3grand speedo reads about 105! But the car is probably only going 75 to 80 mph.

One way to find out what gear ratio you have is to: 1)jack up the rear of the car; 2) rotate the driveshaft until the rear wheels turn one complete revolution; 3)note how many times driveshaft was rotated.

approx 3 and 1/4 turns = 3.23
approx 3 and 1/2 turns = 3.42
approx 3 and 3/4 turns = 3.73
approx 4 turns = 4.10

It's quite difficult for us to figure it out if we don't know the stock gear size. Does your car fit the Y87 description in the 3.8 modification sticky?

It will happen to anybody's car, if they don't get the speedo recalibrated.

Hey stang gt, do you have aftermarket gears in your car? I just need to find someone who does so i can ask a few questions, cause its not cool when your car shuts off going 80mph. And it cost more to get the speedo corrected than it does to just replace the rear gears

It actually costs less to recal the speedo. You can either recal them with a new speedo gear, or via the PCM. I don't have gears on my Camaro, but did have them on my Mustang. Just used a hand held tuner to fix the error. It's $250+ to get the gears replaced.

The main reason im going to change gears back to factory is that i get really crappy gas mileage when im turning over 3rpm on the highway. Plus i can buy the gears and slap them in no prob. The camaro is not like the mustang in that you have to replace the speed and rpm gears in the trans. cause you cant just program it in the car also you cannot buy them at the dealer. Plus i would have to count the teeth on the gear just to know what size i would need.

I understand changing them for gas mileage. Though 3,000 rpms means either: 1) you have super high rear end ratio, or 2) you drive too fast. The following is about the 00-02 3.8 Camaro. Yes it can just be reprogrammed. Mustangs also have speedo gears, which can be changed if desired over the programmer.

"Hypertech power programmers and power chips are the easiest performance products to install in your Camaro. These Hypertech products improve performance by recalibrating the engine management system for maximum performance. With the power programmer, you can lower the fan actuation temperature, adjust the speed limiter, raise the RPM limiter and shift points and even recalibrate the speedometer for tire size or axle ratio changes, all in less than 10 minutes. Complete step by step instructions help program the computer to the specific specifications that your car has. We recommend the 160 degree thermostat when using a chip or power programmer to achieve optimum performance."
