That all depends. My mom loves her 84 S10 so much I could not replace it with a later 4.3 truck for her. So I bought two Astro vans. A 97 and 98. One wrecked, one needed intake gaskets and a cat. I fixed the intake and put the cat from the wrecked one on the fixed one and sold it for 4 times the amount I paid for the two! Then I took the parts I needed from the wrecked one and had lots of cash left over to do the swap.
A V8 swap in a car that was built for a V6 or V8 is easy. You have to also consider what condition the body is in.

The factory built them.

They are called donor cars.

With the right amount of luck, you find one with all the stuff you need still in it.
