Hi,

the AC compressor on my 93 v6 is making a whole world of noises, I think its the clutch thats gone bad in it so I've picked up a second hand one from a junk yard. I've also got the hose assebly that connects to the back of the compressor and comes up and joins near the firewall (the hose with the refill valve on it)

In the Haynes manual it says that you need to drain the old compressors oil in to a container to measure it, then pour the same amount of oil into the new compressor... now.... this aircon oil is very difficult to buy over here in the UK so I was planning on swapping the pump and hose at home and then driving to an aircon cnetre and hving them regass the system. My questions are:

Is gassing the system enough to put the oil back in the compressor?

Is it safe enough to use the car with no oil in the compressor?

Anyone done this before and have any tips?

If you run it without oil, the compressor will just burn up. Some places that sell refill kits, sell some that comes with oil mixed with the refrigerant. If ever unsure of what you're doing (even after getting our advice) take it to the shop.

 

it'd only burn up if i tried running the ac though surely? And with no gas in the system the low pressure switch should stop the compressor sharft turning shouldn't it? Shouldn't the pulley just free spin on the shaft?

 

You're right. I thought you were talking about using the A/C with no oil.

 

ah, no....sorry, i didnt say that clearly i gues.. I wouldn't use the a until it was oil'd and gassed
