Default catalytic converter causing coil to go bad?.

So I had to get my catalytic conveter replaced this week. It was rattling and every so often I guess it was cloging up and causing the car engine to bog down, and my check engine light would come on. The mechanic said the converter went bad because of a bad coil pack - my question is everytime I have had a coil pack go badin the past, it went bad in a flash...the car ran terrible and it was obvious it was a bad coil pack. My car runs and idles great untill the converter stops up....I have never heard of a Cat Converter going bad because of a coil pack? Wouldnt the car be runing terrible If I had a coil pack bad or is he trying to get more work? I told him I would replace the coil my self - he said I need to do it quick or it my screw up the converter...your thoughts?

They called today, I told them to just install the Converter only...I will do the coil IF it needs it. I should get it later today.

Sweet. If you have to, changing coils is cake.
