Car doesn't always start
#21
I was referring to starting issues. mechanically... if you take care of the motor you'll rarely have problems. Case in point:
1988 C10...308,000 mi. Died when kid brother decided to drive it to florida and didn't do the usual stuff before a 1400 mile nonstop trip.
1992 cutlass 3.8...290,000....Tranny died and it wasn't worth the repair bill.
1995 3.4....212,000 and the intake gasket leaked water into the #4 cylinder...not rare for those motors. Once I get off my *** and fix it...I'm sure I'll see 300K out of that too.

but is there gas in the tank?Let your mechanic do a compression test. If compression results are ok, then troubleshoot the following systems: fuel delivery, ignition, air supply. Vehicle should start if these systems are all working properly, even if it runs shabbily. You need good compression, a spark, and a mixture of air and gas for combustion to take place.

Does the car even try to turn over or does it just do nothing?
If it tries but fails then I would look at the starter or the battery.
If it does nothing then I would look into the chip in the key. If your car reads the chip wrong then you have to wait 3 mins before you can try again.

Was the pickup by chance a 22r? Those things are indestructible. Its a shame Toyota makes such sh!tty trucks now.

Ok so if it turns over that rules out the VATS which is good. Now how is your fuel pressure? Too low of a fuel pressure can cause hard starting. Try turning the key on (do not start) and listen for the fuel pump to prime. Quickly turn the key off and on again, listen for the pump to prime. Rinse and repeat 3 or 4 times quickly and see if the car starts normally. If it does look at the Fuel Pressure Regualtor or fuel pump. A fuel filter prolly would not hurt either.
