Car bottoming out, and I am in the middle of nowhere (sorta)
Hi All,
I have a 97 RS, and the car started bottoming out, it seemed like only on big bumps at first, but now even on the small bumps the car makes a loud noise. I assume it is the axel hitting the bump stop which is almost all broken.
The problem is that I am in Missoula, MT, and none of the auto stores here have the rear springs. I am on a roadtrip and going to drive to Glacier national park and till I get to Calgary, AB some 500mi and probably 1000s of potholes/bumps away, there are no big cities.
So the question is how can I make my axel not breakdown in the middle of the road? I don't have only the small jack, but I guess I can buy jack stands etc from a store if need be. Is there any quick and dirty fixes? i feel like putting something between springs for now might work....
Help please ?

I really don't think it iws a spring problem, sounds to me the shock absorbers gave up and no longer slowing the movement of the chassis over the axles. If your car looks of normal height from the road, and not leaning to one side, then the springs are doing theie job. Change the snubbers and the shocks and you should be OK. Putting something between the spring coils is not going to stop the bouncing but could cause the springs to break. The job of the springs is to carry the weight of the car, and the job of the shock absorbers is to slow the compression and extension of the springs so that car does not bounce about every time it hits a pot hole.
