Wuld anyone know where i can pichase an alternator with higher amperage rating? I have a 3.4 motor. Original alternators are only around 100amp and its ot enough. My sound system is taking alot of the power fom the rest of the car. So i want a larger alt. to install. Any suggestions?

how many watts? and what amprage is amplifier rated for? and try google search for "high output alt" first couple websites are good.

 

Forgive me for being captain obvious but did you try your local parts store? I dont know where you live so the stores may be different but when my first camaros alternator went i bought one that i think was 145 amp from O'Reillys in Bellevue Nebraska. BTW do you have any idea just how much electricity it is that you need extra above and beyond an OEM alternator?

 

most stock alternators only use about 70-80% of there capability, that being said, you have 25amps, to use sparingly, when everything else is on(nite time driving) more like 40 or so during the day. if your amplifier uses 60amps or less, i wouldnt worry, cuz it uses 60amps, at MAX volume, and MAX output, at MIN ohms load(higher ohm load, actually uses less amps).

so if your between 60 and90 amps, you could also just have alt rebuilt for about 100bucks, that should bring it up to 135-ish.

no local parts store where i live stocks, or even has it in inventory, for either the camaro or my ion.

keep in mind, any HO alt abover 150amps, is gonna be very costly (400+, some around 700)

 

buy a fared compacitor. The thing that stores power so you dont drain your battery.

 

those will make system sound better, it will regulate volts, but actually hurt alt more than not having one, if his alt isnt up to the job. it's a extra item to charge, basically a small battery. you could also, get a 2nd battery and a batter isolator if ur alt is up to it.

if it's killing ur battery/alt, for the time being, i'd replace the fuses with smaller ones, worst it'll do is blow fuse(ex: if it takes 2 30s, but in 2 20s) NEVER put in bigger fuses than it takes though!

Pete, have you used these alternators before? The one in my 91 crapped out and I was either going to get a new one, or have mine rebuilt. Mine is a 105 amp, but with the car and accessories being in stock form, I'm wondering if even the 160 amp is overkill. I just don't want to buy a C.C.C. Alternator (Cheap China Crap)!
