You can get the needle jumping a little do to flow but it should take several minutes before it starts to build pressure. Becarful with the above proceedure. If the headgasket has a small leak and you could fill up the cylinder with coolant,,, Well coolant does not compress well.

I would do a compression check. when ever you run into problems like this. Its a good idea Doesnt take that long. Or take the radiator cap off and start the car. (make sure it filled to the top) If you see air bubbles coming up. or coolant gushing out. You have a head gasket leak or cracked head.
