Default Bad cooling fan?

My friends 94 3.4 V6 has been overheating at idle. I'm trying to fix it for her. I've pretty much got it narrowed down to a bad cooling fan but want to get a little feedback since I don't know this car all that well. At idle once the temp gauge is at halfway or higher the main radiator/cooling fan should be running almost nonstop right, especiall when it's over halfway. Are bad cooling fans common on these model Camaro's at high mileage? When driving overheating isn't a problem only at idle. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

i think they come on at 210 and off at 190. the cars run a little on the warm side. have u run a hot wire to the fans to see if they work. there should be a couple relays in the power box under the hood. check em out. they are all the same except the abs one so change with one u know is working and see if the problem follows or if the fans work. the other could be the temp sensor. not sure on the 6 s but the lt1 has the temp sensor on the water pump. should also be a temp gage sensor in the block. they are different sensors with different output. if nothing else u can wire switch in and turn them on manually.

I don't there is a temp sensor in the water pump..I don't remember seeing one but it's been a long time since I messed with it last, and yea mine runs at just enough under half to say it's under half at all times..I don't think I have ever heard my fan kick on, but I agree, the easiest thing to start with would be testing the fan to be sure the fan is the bad component, and not the wiring or something like that.

If the car is kept outside, sometimes rain leaks onto the motor and it binds/rusts, be sure to lube it with some oil and see if that helps first.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I tested the relays and it's definitley not a bad relay. I went ahead and removed the fan. How should I go about testing to see if it works. I know I need to supply power to it but I'm not sure how to do that without it actually being hooked up to the wiring harness. Could I bring it to an Advance, Autozone ect. to have them test it?

this is from a 93 dealer service manual. shows blue wire is the hot side of the connection black is ground. run 12 volts to the were the blue wire would go and ground the black. fan should work if its good,.

well I supplied power to the fan to test it out and the fan itself definitly works. At this point just about the only thing it could be is a bad coolant temp sensor. I found one of the temp sensors, the one up top near the thermostat housing. Where is the other one at, and which one is which? I know that one sends signal to the fan and the other to the temp gauge.

on the 93 they show one on the intake manifold (temp gage sensor) and one in the head in the front on the driver side (temp sensor) this is the one u want.
