Default Advice needed troublshooting starter?

Afternoon everyone,
I have A 93 CAMARO with the 3.4l. That won't start. The Battery was dead so I tried jump starting it this morning.

The starter doesn't sound quite right, more of an electrical motor spinning sound. I also noticed that the crankshaft and serpentine belt will move about an inch, stop, move another inch, stop....

I'm leaning towards the starter of course, but wanted to get opinions on what else I could check before dropping a bill on a new starter.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the starter is not engaging the flywheel or flex plate. Could be a bad starter, or missing teeth on either the flywheel or starter. Pull the starter and take a good look.

Yeah, the start stop of the crank is leading me to believe there's teeth missing from the starter as well. Hopefully it won't rain this weekend so I can get underneath and pull the starter.
Any chance you think the weak battery would cause the symptoms?

so, it looks like the flexplate is broken. We took the dust cover off and the flexplate is definitely moving. However, the center where it bolts to the crank isn't moving at all. I can see cracks in the plate as well.

Next question, can I push the rans back a few inches to get the flexplate out or do I really have to pull the trans?
