abs inop

Default abs inop

i have a 97 rs and every so often my abs inop light comes on. nothing happens to my brakes or pedal they are still working. when i turn the car off and then start it again the light goes off then it will come back on a little later. does anyone know what could be the problem and how i can fix it? thank you

could be the computer unit. But just a heads up when the light is on ur abs will not work.

Could be a faulty wheel sensor. All the tires the same size all the way around?

i have 2 bigger tires in the back they are the same size and the 12 in the front are the same size. why would that be a problem? thanks

did the problem begin occuring when you put new wheels on the car? And im not sure how much the computer unit is but they are up there.

it started shortly after the newer tires were put on. could that be why the light is coming on? thanks

Yes, the tires would have everything to do with it, if they're a different diameter. Under normal operation, the ABS system works by getting readings from the speed sensors at all 4 wheels. If it registers a different speed from one or more wheels, either while accelerating or braking, it will assume there is a loss of traction and activate the ABS/traction control. If you put on a pair of tires that are a different overall diameter from the other two, the ABS system is going to be constantly giving an off-reading to the computer. So, if that's what you did with the tires, your ABS system is confused. You have two (logical) options, get another pair of tires that match, or live with the fact that you don't have an operational ABS system any more.
