Default 99 Flooding in Cold Weather

I live in Iowa and it has been a little cold lately. This morning I started up the Cam and drove down to the gas station. Shut it off and filled it up. Went to start it and it would crank and fire but not start running. I could smell a fuel build up. So I let it sit and tired again. In doing so I drained the battery. After getting some one to jump me I put the pedal to the floor and it fired right of. This is the second time in a couple months that it has happened. Has anyone else had this issue? I did not let it warm up before I left.

Edit: It's a 3.8L

have it scanned for trouble codes at your local parts store if they can. test temp sensors, check air filter, fuel filter, test fuel pressure, check spark quality with a spark checker. how old are the plugs?

I have had the codes read. It was throwing an O2 sensor code but went away. I have never replaced the plugs and i have owned it a rear. I will check those and have it hooked up again.
