FYI, I had a 89 Beretta with the 2.8 V6, had similiar problems to what you describe. It had a cracked block which allowed HOT combustion gases into the cooling system (but no oil) which caused it to air lock and overheat on a seemingly random basis.
So i took apart the engine today. The head gaskets was in real bad shape. You could clearly see where water had been in the motor and running through the heads.

Should i have the heads tooking to a machine shop to determine if the heads are cracked? if there not cracked should i get the gaskets and put it back together with the same heads?

well they are out you might as well get them checked over. unless you are finding an obvious passage in the headgasket from a cooling passage into the cylinders.

if the heads are checked and are fine from the shop, they should be fine to reuse.

Tomorrow im going to a machine shop to have both the heads pressure tested, cleaned and some other magna word. If they are cracked im going to try and have them rebuilt ? Is this a good way to go. They are the cast iron heads and im hoping there not warped. I'm going to buy a top end gasket set.

Here is what im purchasing. Could someone comment to if this is what i need.

If the heads isnt cracked should i assume it was the gaskets or what else could have been causing it to leak water? there was no water in the oil Btw.

I dont want to put this thing back together without really knowing what was wrong with it. 4 hours taking this thing apart isnt real high on my to do list again,

I would definitely check for a cracked head or you're just going to **** it up even more if it is cracked.

The heads are not cracked. So should i buy a new gasket set and put this thing back together??

if its not the head how did the head gaskets look that u took off. could u see a spot that looked like water could get through? how about the intake did u see any sign of cracks or water intrusion? also need to look for cracks in the cylinder walls to the cylinders that had the water in em.

the cylinders are in great shape, hardly no wear on them whatsoever. And the gaskets was in terrible shape. Tore all to pieces really.
