'01 3.8 intermittent starting
So here's the story. I bought a '01 Camaro (125,xxx) 3.8 5 spd car that had hit a dog and blew the airbags. I got a great deal on it and basically all it needed were the bags replaced, the front end lined back up and the bumper repainted. But soon after I bought it the car just wouldn't start in the morning. Let it sit for a few hours and it fires right up. The car will crank but it won't light. Here's what I've gone through so far..
- plugs, wires and fuel filter
- checked the VATS and is appears to work correctly.
- Put a spark tester on it and It didn't show anything out of #1 on a morning test
- It has backfired though the exhaust before after overcranking..
After that I decided it was electrical and went after components.
- swapped ignition module (took the car to GM and they found and old code that prompted it might be the module so it was first changed)
- swapped coils
- swaped ecm
No progress..
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Troy

is the SES light on at all or has it been ? have you had the computer scanned for codes ? Sounds like it could be a possible timing issue, but too hard to tell at this point. Are you still getting no spark out of #1 after replacing the coils, plugs and wires ?

It threw a code for misfire before but it's intermittent. That's what led me to swapping ignition parts. The crank position sensor was next on my list to change also. I'm getting tired of changing parts and was looking for some opinions. I'll check back after I put one on.

could also be that your ign is going bad you ign has three positions acc, on and start you need to make sure your on position is putting power to your ign wire i can pull wire colors for you but i'm sure that pink and or white are your ign wires and orange and brown are your two acc wires. if you don't have any power on the ign wire with the key in that position the starter wire won't get enought current to crank. so if that's your issue a simple relay could fix that without replacing the ign switch.

**Update, Fixed!**
Thanks for the help guys, it was the crank sensor. I don't see anything wrong with the old one though? The car has fired right up every morning for the last 5 days. I knew I'd find the culprit with enough time but unless it throws a code it's difficult to diagnose.
