trouble with rear end

Yes, the shaft should pretty much slide right out. But if the bolt stripped out the threads in the carrier too, you might as well not worry about getting the rest apart. Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like the shaft hole in the carrier may have taken a little bit of a beating too. You can try and grab the shaft with a vice grips and do a twist & pull. If the hole looks hacked up though, even a new shaft could be a sloppy fit....not good. You still might be looking at wanting to replace the whole rearend, that would be less labor and cost than replacing a damaged carrier. Check and see what the bone yard has.

any 4th ten rear end will fit, yours looks like it is a non traction control unit so that is what you would want. has one sensor in the center were a traction control unit has sensors on both wheels. also looks like a open center section, if you drive in snow and ice they are safer and easier to handle in slick conditions. otherwise a posi unit would be a nice addition.

the threads for the bolt that came out look fine. i looked through there with a flash light. but the shaft will not come out ive tried beating it with a hammer and metal rod. it came out like 2 inch then i had to spin it so it didnt get stuck in the back of the rear end. and i cant pull it out.

Put the hammer down. This is not wood it is hard shaft doing through a cast gear and differential. The shaft is mushroomed on both sides from the sound it. What you need to do is remove the mushroom end with a dermal tool or die grinder and slip the rod out. ( you can use a drill with a grinding stone but it will take a long time) Pounding it out will result in destroying the counter gears and the differential housing. These is still a small chance the rear is repairable.
I can remember repairing a car with a similar failure. It just took the shaft and bolts but you need to catch the failure quickly and don’t hit it with a hammer.
If the bore that holds the large pin or the bore that hold the small pin is damaged you just get another whole 4th gen rear

i got it out. i hope i didnt damage anything i didnt know not to do that. heres some pics of everything. the shaft looks bent i think thats why it wouldnt come out. but once i got it lose i pulled it out pretty easy. and i got two pics of both sides of the carrier so yall could see the shaft holes. and a not so good pic of the hole were the bolt goes in. do yall think the carrier is still good?

ok i got a shaft and a locker bolt. this is how the fit looks. its a tiny bit lose but i believe it will work. i used two diffrent spider gears cause one was messed up. the other came out of a 2000 camaro and ones from mine a 99 camaro. they have diffrent markings but there the same size. ima clean the rear end up tomorrow and finish putting it together. i hope all this works.

It might work for a little but the vibration cause by the looseness is going to break the small pin that holds it in place. Also the smaller gears are not going to happy about moving back and forth.
Start looking for a new rear.
