Default Transmission rebuild in a '94 Z28 Auto

Hello all! Let me start by saying I visit the site pretty often and most everyone on here seem pretty knowledgeable about their cars. So, I figured this to be a great place to ask my question.
I found a '94 Z28 that needs a transmission rebuild (it is an auto) I was thinking about buying the car and having a local shop do the work. If I wanted to rebuild and make it "race ready" how much do you think I'll have to cough up? I would also like to upgrade the Torque Converter.
This, believe it or not, will be my first automatic car. So, I know zero about automatics. I always here people talking about "shift kits", but I'm sure making an auto more efficient on a quarter mile is more difficult than just slapping a shift kit in it.
Thanks for the help!

ok i chased you down. lol. can you do the trany yourself. that would leave extra cash to invest in the tranny. heres a couple places that sell them,
performabuild is a site sponsor and has great products.

if its gona work you should be able to exchange the tailpiece with the one off your 94. make sure the reluctor is the same as well.

Hey Craby. Sorry for the delay with my reponse. I've been laid up in bed with a broken ankle for the past few days. (Ouch!)
Anyway, I have never worked on transmissions before and don't plan on starting any time soon. I was just planning on taking it to a local shop and letting them do the work.
Thanks for the links Craby. Very helpful.
