T56 reverse grinds

T56 reverse grinds
Pushing in the clutch I can put the shifter in reverse but as I let out the clutch gears start to grind.
No other gears have this problem. I always hit 1st or 2nd gear before trying reverse to synchronize the gears.
Plenty of hydraulic fluid in the clutch bowl. Pedal feels good.
This happened out of the blue without any warning.
I can not start the car in reverse already, as soon as I bring the clutch pedal up it starts to grind.
I’m thinking this is a tranny problem, something is not engaging.

From your description you are saying it goes into reverse fine but when you let out the clutch then it grinds. The only way to be sure what is going on is a tear down. A good trans guy can probably tell the difference between the shift sleeve not fully engaging or a problem with the counter shaft by sound, but both require a tear down to fully diagnose or repair.

Yes, the shifter feels as if it’s in the right place, it’s just that it acts as if the gears can not get close enough to reach each other. Plenty of pedal below and above point of engagement.
I’ll probably have to start thinking of buying a rebuilt.

Still would not hurt to track down someone that knows T56's and get them to test drive it. I would hate for you to swap in a remaned only to find out there was an odd ball issue with the shifter.
