rear end noise help first week owning!
hey there, this is my first post. just bought a 94 z28 last week and i have some issues. so in the past two days ive noticed a weird clunking noise coming from the rear of the car whenever i press hard on the pedal. im trying to figure out what the issue is. Ive heard the rears of these camaros have a hard time holding up to power. i have a little below 400 whp and im wondering if my axle is starting to break.. also have 410 gears if that makes a difference. 61000 miles. first time camaro owner please try to lend some knowledge! -John

Does it sound like someone is banging on the tunnel with a sledgehammer? The rearend has a torque arm connected to it, coming forward and attaching to the tail of the trans. Eventually, this lifting force can tear the trans mount apart, and the rear of the trans will lift up and hit the tunnel when you mash the gas pedal.

that could very well be it. its a loud thumping noise that i can feel in the gear shifter as well. would that be the fault of the trans mount or the torque arm then? under moderate gradual acceleration its fine but agressive mashing i feel it.

The trans mount. If you have a floor jack, you can check by slowly jacking up the trans by the pan (spanning it with a board first).
Watch the trans mount as you lift, and see if the north and south portions don't part ways.

Just take it real easy on the gas pedal, and you should be ok. What can get injured from the trans flopping around like that is your u-joints.
You sure would hate for the driveshaft to take a dump on you while going down the road. Pole vaulting anyone?

update: took the car to the shop. turns out there were a couple bolts loose connecting the crossmember to the subframe. (i i remember that right) tightened them up and the car was fixed for free. whew! thats a load off my mind!!

Just run by this topic. I have the same sound coming from mine, and hope its the same issue (lose bolts). It as the aftermarket tranny mount. was it just the bolts that hold the cross member that where lose?
