There's really no difference in power and if your looking to race the car auto is where its at... but for a nice street car there's nothing better than a manual. At least in my opinion.

Manual transmission is more efficient than an automatic. Automatics steal power from the engine to do the shifting. They also generate a lot of heat. Heat is never free so that is more energy lost. Also Manual trans tend to have more gears. More gears means you can keep a motor in its power band better. As for racing, in drag racing automatics are pretty common, the stall converter allows for a good lunch but even among the pro drag racers there are many that still use a standard tranny. In any other form of racing manual make up about 99% of the cars.
The swap? I always say if you have to ask if it is hard it probably is. The biggest factor in the “is swap hard to do” is you. Are you the kind of guy that does not think twice about cutting a 12” x 12” hole in your floor and welding in a donor floor section? Do you mind sending your PCM out to get flashed with a standard tranny profile? Dealing with modifying the harness going to be an issue? To do the swap and get the full effect you may have to change you rear gears but that would depend on what your car came with.

you can have the trans built to a manual shift and have the converter locked all the time. that is hard on the trans if your city driving and the trans probly wont live as long with the extra heat produced.

Here you go, the best of both worlds. Problem solved, except for the slight dent left in your wallet!

Paddle shifter in a Camaro? Hmm....
I grew up around manual transmissions and I enjoy them because they make you feel even more apart of the car. But I enjoy my automatic just as much as I enjoyed any manual. Sure, it'd yield better mpg but in my opinion, you can get just as good if you lighten the car a bit and drive conservatively.
