I have done some searching in the forum, but have not found an answer that seems solid. I could have overlooked it.
If a 93 Z28 has a 4l60 trans and is a 4th gen, is it compatable with any of the 3rd gen camaro 4l60s? Because i gather that without expensive/extensive modification going E is out of the question.

The 4L60 is just a 700R4 with a new name. Around 1990, GM started using different designations. 4 speed, Longitudinally positioned (rear wheel drive), 6000 lbs. gross vehicle weight rating. Whereas the 4T60 is the Transversely positioned (sideways-front wheel drive) version. Swapping like-kind transmissions poses no problems. The 4L60E has electronic shift solenoids as opposed to having a TV cable. It can work for you, but you'll need to buy an aftermarket controller.

there are different plugs for the 700r4/4l60 transmission. the 93 has a not so much used 5 prong plug. one wire each for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear, a wire for the tcc driver and a hot wire. the tranny shop i am dealing with was not real happy to hear i had it and wanted me to lock the converter clutch in all the time.

Man, the 93 is a bastard child coming from a few directions, ain't it?
And...was it a "reputable" transmission shop that recommended you lock the converter at all times? Don't they know that the lockup feature in the converter can't sustain the torque from "spirited" driving in the 1-2-3 gear range? Your tc would be toast in no time at all if you did that, and that's why they're designed to lockup in 4th.

Thanks for the info, that helps, from what i understand the bell housing on this particular model is not detachable. does that mean that i will have to pull the trans from another '93 V8 in order to ensure that it matches up with the motor correctly or is there a possiblity that i could get one from a 3rd gen V8?
I found a few 4l60 trans on CL and would like to consider getting one just to throw in for now while I learn to rebuild the original is there a resource that will tell me which models are fit compatable?

i think the 92 and 93 are interchangable but both being during a transition yr u will need to check your plug and the plug of the tranny u wish to use. i think some 92s and 93s are 5 prong and some are not. thats the hangup if u have the 5 prong then the wiring and such inside is for that plug and the cars computer. pretty sure there both 30 spline shafts. u may have to change the tail shaft from yours so the mount is right.
