Yeah, go ahead and post that up, I'd think you're looking at the wrong thing.

Don't know what you were looking at, but your oil pump sucks off the bottom of the pan, just like other conventional engines. Looking at the exploded view below, parts 433, 436, and the small related parts is what makes up your oil pump. Part 431 is the oil pickup (with a built-in screen) that hangs down into the dropped portion of the oil pan. You shouldn't have any "contaminants" at the bottom of the pan to worry about. Any small crud that can fit through the screen will be caught by the oil filter.

Apparently I was looking at the right thing but I guess it goes down way further than the book made it appear. The picture I was looking at made it seem like it hardly goes into the pan.
Looks like I could get started on recreating that baffle then.

well at least we got that figured out, I've never heard of a pickup sitting on top of the oil, I mean, if the oil got low, it would starve the motor completely

An oil pump that draws off the top would be immediate engine disaster. Once the engine is running, the oil pan is never to the full mark like it is when sitting off. The oil is pumped to the top of the engine (heads, etc.) and runs back down to the pan. That return trip to the pan doesn't happen in an instant.

So, I have an update that might interest all of you! I was tired of the sagging crappy looking, ripped up headliner, and I didnt want to just get another one that would end up the same way in a short amount of time. So, I decided to make a custom vinyl headliner. Here are the photos!
