Default auto shifter??

i just got a 2000 V6 auto camaro.. the auto shifter is HUGE! it sticks up way to high!... like that bar part. Is it possible to cut out part of the little bar and reweld the bar back together to make it lower?

.....well you know the button that you have to puch down at the top. doesnt that push some type of rod down that is in the shaft? i guess i just dont really understand how the shifter and button work... if it was a manual, i could simply do it, but i dont know if there is something that i wouldnt want to cut inside of the shaft....? anyone know?

(sorry if that was a little confusing i dont really know how to word it!)

Ok..get a pair of tweezers and go to your car.

1. Turn key till the lights come on
2. keep your foot on the brake and move shifter back enough to see the backside of it..(recommend shifting it all the way back)
3. use your tweezers to take out the staple from the shifter.
4. Pull the shifter off

to put shifter back on do the same
