Bought an '02 35th Anniversary coupe several months ago. Car is in real nice shape, have corrected a couple of mechanical issues and now on to the interior. Pewter inserts in the seats were really dirty (they looked more like brown than pewter) and spent hours cleaning 'em. Ebony leather is marginal and drivers seat has seam split and cut on the bloster in the usual place. Leather is damaged to the point that it can't just be re-sewn, but the leather section of the seat has to be replaced to repair it. Upholestry shops in the area say they can do it, but I'm concerned that the one new piece they replace will, even though might be the same leather as the original seat, it won't match the 20-year old ebony leather on the original seat in the car and stick out like a sore thumb.
Thoughts!?
I've notice on some of the 35th Anniversary cars for sale, a lot of the gray seat inserts have seemed to discolor like you describe. If you're not talking about replacing all the seat covers, I could see these panels being hard to match. The Ebony material should be easier to match, depending on the wear. There appears to be a difference in grain between leather, so that will be something you might have to watch. I've attached pages from The Detroit Book that list the upholstery materials used in 2002 which should help finding the correct leather.
