Exclamation WTF?! You tell me...

Ok so I have a friend of a friend race with me a bit and he was losing ...a lot... and then he showed me that what he dose in his car(he has an automatic) he puts it in 1 then when he gets close to the red line he puts it into 2 and then when that gets close he puts it into 3 and then into drive. I was speechless cuz i thought it was dumb I didn't tell him nothing cuz im not sure if its ok to do it or not. Can you guys explain to me whats the purpuse of doing that and what might be the risks involved with doing it?

it gives you the wannabe feeling of having a manual trans. theres no reason to do that your trans will go into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd itself.

When you shift an automatic, you're not actually shifting gears. You're enabling the next higher gear. The transmission will shift when it's good and ready and it's best to let it do its job. Otherwise, you're just gonna over-rev the engine and risk damaging it, as well as the transmission.

If the kid wanted to do the gear changing himself, he should've bought a manual.

I had a friend do this too and i could beat him even with a car with less power. The auto trans knows how to shift under all conditions and will give you the best shifts at the right moments. Unless you have a manual valve body or manual shift mode then shifting your auto manually is a waste of time and power.

BTW redline does not always mean time to shift. Alot of the time shifting just before redline, like where your horsepower peaks is the optimum shift point.
