Question What's it worth?

My father in law recently passed away and left us with his - what I would consider to be mint condition 1997 Camero with 128,000 miles on it...

It is a 30th Anniversary model with the following specs:

Year 1997 Engine Type 3.8L V6 OHV 12V Make Chevrolet Driveline RWD Model Camaro Ground Clearance 4.00 in. Trim Level RS Coupe Front Brake Type Disc Manufactured In CANADA Rear Brake Type Disc Body Style COUPE 2-DR Anti-Brake System 4-Wheel ABS Transmission 5-Speed Manual Overdrive
4-Speed Automatic Overdrive
Standard Seating 4 MPG Hwy 29 - 30 miles/gallon Optional Seating No data MPG City 19 miles/gallon Tires 235/60R16 Dealer Invoice $16,443 USD Wheelbase 101.10 in. MSRP $17,970 USD Curb Weight 3302 lbs

I am not a Camero person, but if this car is not worth selling... then maybe I should just keep it... very clean car. Was only driven in Florida weather... is now up north, but never seen road salt. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. Just looking for some quick thoughts on this. Thanks.

This is an RS? it says RS on the side of the car? You want to see if it is a Y87 car. I think the options should be listed in the glove box. The RS thing can be confusing because all coupes are listed as Coupe/RS on the title.

Y87 RS with those miles from a private party should bring 4-5K in near mint condition. You might have to wait a while for the right buyer. Most guys that want a 4th gen and have 5K are looking at V8s.

If it is not a Y87-RS then your looking more like 3-4K most likely closer to the 3.

Gorn,

Thanks for the info. I will check the Glove Box for more info as you said, but I think for what it's worth we may just keep the car as a keep sake if that's all I will get out of it. The car is mint for the most part.

the engine says 3800 Series II on it... not sure if that lends to anything. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks much!

Btw, all 97's are anniversary cars. The white with orange stripes Z28 is the "Special Anniversary Edition", and can be had in the $4-5k range with under 100k miles. Since you said "up north" I can only assume we're comparing similar markets with where I'm finding these. A V6 model, with the miles yours has (and less actually), can be had for an easy $3k or below any day of the week.

My 4-5K estimate may be a little optimistic. The price on these 4th gens is dropping quickly. 3-4 years ago (when I bought mine) that was a 7-8K car but back then most LS1's where over 10K.

Now you can get a LS1 over 100,000 miles for 5K. I do not see a lot of true RS/Y87 cars so it is hard to say. If I was looking for a 3800-V6 car that is the one I would want.

If you are going to keep it and do not have the history, get it check for an intake leak. It is a known issue and the main reason for engine failer. If you catch it before it fails its a $400 repair. Otherwise it will cost you an engine. GM had so many failures just outside of warranty they got sued and lost.
